Identification with thoughts is at the source of suffering and unhappiness. Inquire into these thoughts to determine if they’re useful. Stop feeding them, and realize that without relying on them, you’re still here as presence itself. Feel into the suffering that thoughts produce, and lose the tunnel vision that repetitive patterns create. Return again and again to knowing yourself as silent awareness.

When you no longer need these techniques, they’ll disappear. But use them wholeheartedly if they help. When your mind captures your attention, effortlessly return to the aware presence of you—empty of constricting thought forms, but overflowing with beauty, joy, tenderness, and love.

The End of the Mind-Driven Life

If you want to live in ever-present happiness, consider the end of the mind-driven life. Take everything you know, everything that defines you, and throw it into the holy fire. Surrender any thoughts you’re holding on to—any ideas, attachments, hopes, desires, preferences. Open every cell of your being. Listen deeply, with nothing in the way—no expectations at all about what you’ll discover. Be so devoid of any personal will that you’re open to embracing whatever appears.

Then, go forth and enjoy yourself. Here’s what you might discover:

No more resistance to anything that happens. (It takes a belief or expectation to resist.)

No more unwanted stress. (Stress is based on shoulds, have-tos, and musts—all thoughts.)

No more person who thinks he must be in control. (You recognize the personal, separate self as simply thoughts, preferences, and feelings. There’s no real entity that is you.)

Clarity. (Without the confusion of thoughts, fresh insights appear. What to do becomes obvious.)

Well being. (Quiet mind, calm, happiness)

Love and compassion. (With the ending of absorption in personal dramas, true love is unleashed.)

Endless peace.
